Men's Clothing Size Charts

A men's clothing size chart is only useful if it describes the brand you are actually buying from, which is why this page keeps twenty of them side by side. All in centimetres, with chest, waist, hip and — where the brand publishes it — shoulder and inseam. Men's sizing is simpler than women's in one way (US and UK share the same letters) and harder in another (EU runs 44–54 in even numbers, Japan runs a full size smaller).

How men's sizes differ by country

A US men's M is not an EU M. US and UK letters match, but the EU scale runs in even numbers — a US M is normally an EU 48, and a US L an EU 50. Japanese sizing is built one size smaller than US retail, so a US M is often a JP L. If a brand only publishes a single chart, treat it as its home market and convert with the size converter.

The bigger variable is cut, not label: Nike cuts athletic through the chest, Carhartt is cut for layering, Uniqlo is cut for a slimmer frame. That is why the same measurement can land in two different labels across brands.

How to measure for a men's clothing size chart

  1. Chest — around the fullest part, tape under the arms and parallel to the floor. Arms down; raising them changes the number.
  2. Waist — at the narrowest point, usually just above the navel. Do not measure at the waistband of your trousers: modern waistbands sit below the natural waist and read 3–5 cm larger.
  3. Hips — widest point, feet together. Only matters for trousers and shorts.
  4. Inseam — crotch seam to hem on a pair that fits, or crotch to ankle bone on the body.

Two numbers cover most purchases: chest for anything worn on the upper body, waist for trousers. If they conflict — a 40 inch chest with a 34 inch waist, say — buy to the chest and accept a looser waist, because letting a waistband in is a routine alteration and letting a chest out is not. The full method is in how to take body measurements.

Men's size chart questions

What size is a 40 inch chest in men’s clothing?

A 40 inch chest sits at the top of US M (38–40) and the bottom of L (42–44). If you prefer a fitted look, M; for a relaxed fit or anything worn over a shirt, L.

Is a US men’s M the same as an EU M?

No. US and UK letters match, but EU tops run as even numbers: a US M is normally an EU 48 and a US L an EU 50. A US men’s clothing size chart and a European one do not describe the same body.

Do men’s trousers use the same size chart as tops?

No. Trousers and jeans are sold by waist measurement (28–40 inches) rather than a letter, which is why jeans sizing survives across countries better than tops sizing.

Why do I get a different size in every brand?

Because a size is a range, and each brand sets its range around its own fit model. Nike cuts athletic through the chest, Carhartt is cut for layering, Uniqlo is built on Japanese sizing and runs about a size small. The label is the last thing to trust.
