Clothing Size Converter
Quick answer: pick the size you know and the table gives you the US, UK, EU, Italian, French and Japanese equivalent — for women’s clothing, men’s tops and shoes. The conversion below is the common retail mapping, which is the part most people get wrong: it is a convention, not a standard, and brands drift from it by up to a full size.
Clothing size conversion chart
This clothing size conversion chart covers four families of garment: women's clothing, men's tops, men's shoes and women's shoes. Pick the table, choose the size you know, and read across for the US, UK, EU, Italian, French and Japanese equivalents.

Conversions are the common retail mapping, not a standard. Two brands can label the same measurement differently — always confirm on the brand's own chart.
Why a size label does not survive the border
A “M” is not a measurement, it is a position inside a range that each market defines for itself. Three things break the mapping:
- Different zero points. UK women’s sizes sit four numbers above US (US 8 = UK 12), and Japanese women’s sizes sit three above US. The offset is roughly constant, but only roughly.
- Letters versus numbers. EU men’s tops run 44–54 in even steps, US runs XS–2XL in six steps. The two grids do not line up, so an EU 48 lands between a US M and L depending on the brand.
- Vanity sizing. The same nominal size has grown over the decades in the US and UK, and some brands cut a size larger than the label to flatter. That is why a chart from 2015 and a chart from 2025 disagree.
The conversion that actually works
Convert labels only when you have no better information. When the brand publishes measurements — and most do, in a size guide PDF — ignore the label entirely: take your chest, waist and hips, then find the row whose range contains them.
You can get those three numbers without a tape measure using the clothing size calculator, then match them against the brand size chart library. That route survives vanity sizing because it compares numbers, not letters.
Frequently asked questions
What is a US size 8 in UK sizes?
A US women’s 8 is usually a UK 12, an EU 40, an IT 42 and a JP 11. The gap is not constant: US and UK women’s sizes diverge by four numbers across the range, so a US 2 is a UK 6 and a US 16 is a UK 20.
What is a US men’s medium in EU sizes?
A US men’s M is normally an EU 48. EU men’s tops run in even numbers from 44 (XS) to 54 (2XL), which is why a European M and an American M are rarely the same garment.
Is a US men’s shoe size 9 the same as a UK 8?
Yes for men — US 9 is UK 8, EU 42.5 and roughly 27 cm in Japan. Women’s shoes use a different scale: a US women’s 8 is a UK 6 and an EU 38.5.
Why do the same letter sizes fit differently in different countries?
Because the letter is a range, and each market sets its range around a different body. Japanese sizing is typically one size smaller than US retail, EU tops run in even numbers rather than letters, and UK women’s sizes sit four numbers above US.
How do I convert a size when the brand only publishes measurements?
Skip the label: get your chest, waist and hip measurements and compare them to the brand’s own chart. The size calculator does the first half and the brand size chart library does the second.
